Week 6: (3.11.17)
What I learnt:
This week we focused on Harvard referencing. The importance
of it; such as protection from accusations of plagiarism, evidence our points are
valid, accrue accurate information to the reader and allows the reader to know
where we accessed our information from. Our work should contain both primary (first-hand
experience/ direct evidence) and secondary (based on another person analyse/opinions)
research. A Harvard reference included citing in the text and also a bibliography,
that shall contain background reading as well.
We were taught how to cite different types of sources such
as books (Novels, google scholar, google books), films and online sources
(articles, YouTube). A citation is the shortened version of a reference that
appears in our bibliography.
We also had a recap on character; without characters, there
is no stories. Characters can be more memorable than their stories. They can
fall back on to stereotypes, the canny and are dependent on technology.
Progress this week:
This we I decided to research about semiotics, finding out
about codes that I can use to deconstruct and analyse Elsa’s visual design.
(for example, colours, clothing, body language.) ‘Signs take the form of words, images, sounds, odours, flavours, acts
or objects, but such things have no intrinsic meaning and become signs only
when we invest them with meaning.' This is quote is also relevant to the
way a variety of people have brought meaning to the character Elsa, fitting her
to their own issues (some say she is a ‘supressed’ gay, depressed, anorexic
ect). I also researched into ‘What makes a hero?’ by Ted talks, which helped me
identify ‘Anna’ as the hero, not ‘Elsa’. Other than research, this week I have begun to
write up my essay; so far only and introductory paragraph.
